  • Class I examinations - these are required for commercial airline transport pilots, but are also needed by most first officers and many business aviation flight crews. FAA approval is 6 months for those older than 40 and 12 months for those younger than 40.
  • Class II examinations - these are required for commercial pilots of business aviation flight crews, crop dusters, aerial advertising pilots, charter pilots or navigators and first officers of commercial airline flights. FAA approval can range from 12 to 60 months depending on age and third-class certificate status.
  • Class III examinations - these are used for recreational or private pilots. FAA approval is 24 months for those older than 40 and 60 months if you're younger than 40.

Classes of FAA Medical Exams

Class I examinations are typically required for commercial airline transport pilots but are also needed by most First Officers and many business aviation flight crews.

Class II examinations are required for commercial pilots of other types like business aviation flight crews, crop dusters, aerial advertising pilots, charter pilots, or navigators and first officers of commercial airline flights.

Class III examinations are typically used for recreational or private pilots.

How long your FAA approval is good for:

Class I: 6 calendar months if older than age 40 at the time of evaluation; 12 months if younger than age 40

Class II: 12 calendar months

Class III: 60 calendar months if younger than age 40 at the time of evaluation; 24 calendar months if age 40 or older at the time of evaluation.

How much does the exam cost:

FAA Exams are $148. FAA Exams with an EKG is $198.

EKG's are an additional $50 charge. Typically, and EKG requirement applies to 1st class exams only. Your initial EKG is performed at age 35 and is good until your 40th birthday. After 40 years of age, you will be required to have a yearly EKG. These EKG's be performed in clinic, the day of your exam. Outside EKG's do not qualify. Payment is due at the time of service, unless you are Air Traffic Control. ATC is billed to FAA directly.
